Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of Barkly district.

Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms over the northwestern Barkly this evening.

Weather Situation
A trough system over the central NT embedded in a very humid and unstable airmass is likely to produce slow-moving clusters of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall this evening.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Barkly
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Elliott and Renner Springs.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* slow down and turn your headlights on
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current

The next warning is due to be issued by 9:55 pm.

Initial Minor Flood Warning For The Victoria River
Issued at 12:59 PM ACST on Thursday 12 March 2026
Flood Warning Number: 1

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT KALKARINDJI FRIDAY MORNING
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast over the Victoria River catchment from Thursday afternoon. River level rises and minor flooding are possible along Victoria River at Kalkarindji from Friday morning with forecast rain.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End.

Upper Victoria River:
Minor flooding is possible along Upper Victoria River at Kalkarindji.
The Victoria River at Kalkarindji is currently at 1.14 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Victoria River at Kalkarindji may exceed the minor flood level (9.00 m) Friday morning with forecast rain.

Victoria River between Armstrong River and Wattie Creek:
River level rises are occurring along the Camfield River and the Victoria River between the Armstrong River and Wattie Creek.
Victoria River between Battle Creek and Armstrong River:
River level rise are occurring along the Victoria River between Battle Creek and the Armstrong River.
Victoria River below Battle Creek:
River level rises are occurring along the Victoria River downstream of Battle Creek. Further rises are expected at Victoria River Crossing over the next few days.

Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
