for Damaging Winds
for Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of North East, North West Coast and Central North Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:59 pm Sunday, 19 October 2025.
Damaging winds about exposed locations tonight, extending broadly again mid-morning Monday.
Weather Situation
Vigorous northwesterly flow developed over much of Tasmania ahead of a cold front which crossed the state today. Winds have turned westerly in its wake and are expected to weaken for a period overnight, before strengthening again ahead of a second cold front expected to cross later on Monday. The strong westerly winds are expected to gradually weaken into Monday evening.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central North, Central Plateau and Midlands
For ELEVATED TERRAIN and EXPOSED FAR SOUTHERN TASMANIA: DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS averaging 65 to 75 km/h with peak gusts around 115 km/h are possible, becoming likely from late morning on Monday.
For the REMAINDER including Hobart: DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are possible from mid-morning on Monday, becoming likely during the afternoon.
Winds across the state are expected to ease below warning thresholds during Monday evening.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Oatlands, Bicheno, Orford, Bothwell, Geeveston, Dover, Campbell Town and Fingal.
115 km/h wind gust was recorded at Hartz Mountains at 3:39 pm.
102 km/h wind gust was recorded at Cape Bruny at 2:34 pm.
Sustained 67 km/h winds were recorded at Hobart Airport at 10:57 am.
154 km/h wind gust was recorded at Maatsuyker Island at 8:46 am.
139 km/h wind gust was recorded at Scotts Peak at 8:44 am.
117 km/h wind gust was recorded at Low Rocky Point at 7:10 am.
124 km/h wind gust was recorded at kunanyi at 7:02 am.
107 km/h wind gust was recorded at Tasman Island Airport at 4:02am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Sunday.
