for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall

for parts of Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands Forecast Districts.

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL DEVELOPING FROM THIS AFTERNOON

Weather Situation
Tropical Low 29U is offshore of Port Douglas, with heavy showers and thunderstorms extending along the monsoon trough through the Daintree and along the northeast coast to Innisfail. The low is expected to move onshore late tomorrow morning near Cardwell, but the heaviest rainfall is forecast to be further north of the system centre.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL for the following areas:
Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast on the North Tropical Coast north of Innisfail. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 160 mm are likely, and 24-hourly rainfall totals of 350 mm are possible. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible during this evening through to Friday morning, with six-hourly totals up to 220 mm.
Rainfall is expected to extend inland later on Friday as the low moves onshore. The location of any areas of heavy rain beyond Friday remains highly uncertain.

Locations which may be affected include Cairns, Port Douglas, Hope Vale, Mareeba, Yarrabah, Wujal Wujal, Cooktown, Atherton, Daintree Village, Laura, Mossman and Innisfail.

Emergency services advise people to:
* If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust.
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Thursday.

TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 5

Headline:
Decreasing chance of a tropical cyclone forming near the North Tropical Coast, but impacts still expected.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: None.

Watch zone: None.

Cancelled zone: Cooktown to Palm Island, including Port Douglas, Cairns, Innisfail and Palm Island.

Details of Tropical Low 29U at 10:00 am AEST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 55 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 85 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 35 kilometres of 15.7 degrees South 148.9 degrees East, estimated to be 360 kilometres east northeast of Cairns and 420 kilometres northeast of Cardwell.
Movement: southwest at 20 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Low 29U is in the Coral Sea to the northwest of Willis Island. It is expected to move to the southwest today, and cross between Cairns and Townsville during Friday.
The likelihood of Tropical Low 29U developing into a tropical cyclone before it makes landfall has decreased, however impacts are still expected.

Hazards:
A Severe Weather Warning is current in parts of Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands Forecast Districts. Communities may experience significant impacts even at some distance from where the system is forecast to make landfall.
A Flood Watch is current for northern and far northern catchments.

- People between Cooktown and Palm Island, including Port Douglas, Cairns and Innisfail, stay informed by checking your local government s Disaster Dashboards for the latest updates.

Initial Minor Flood Warning For The Daintree River And Initial Flood Warning For The Mossman River

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT DAINTREE VILLAGE OVERNIGHT THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across the Daintree and Mossman catchments during the remainder of Thursday and during Friday as Tropical Low 29U approaches the coast. Creek and river level rises are likely across the catchments. With forecast rainfall, minor flooding is possible at Daintree Village overnight Thursday into Friday. Higher levels are possible if heavy rainfall persists.
A Flood Watch is current for North Tropical Coast and parts of Cape York Peninsula, Central Coast, Capricornia and Carpentaria catchments.

Daintree River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Daintree River.
The Daintree River at Daintree Village is currently at 2.00 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
With forecast rainfall, the Daintree River at Daintree Village may reach around the minor flood level (4.00 m) overnight Thursday into Friday. Higher levels are possible if heavy rainfall persists.

Mossman River:
Elevated river levels are likely along the Mossman River.

Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.
