Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for Western and parts of Upper Derwent Valley, South East and Central Plateau Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:40 pm Friday, 19 September 2025.
Damaging winds to develop over southern Tasmania this evening.
Weather Situation
West to northwesterly winds are strengthening ahead of an approaching cold front. The front clears to the east late this evening, with winds tending west to southwesterly associated with a passing low pressure system. Winds ease from the west during Saturday morning as the low clears into the Tasman Sea.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East and Central Plateau
DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible in the southwest from early this evening, and the far south and Tasman Peninsula from late this evening. Winds shift WEST TO SOUTHWESTERLY from early Saturday morning before easing below warning thresholds by late Saturday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Strahan and Strathgordon.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Friday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
