Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for King Island, Furneaux Islands and parts of North East, North West Coast and Central North Forecast Districts.
Issued at 2:30 pm Monday, 23 June 2025.
Damaging winds developing about the northern exposed coast and Islands on Tuesday.
Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system in the Great Australian Bight moves slowly east. Winds increase as it shifts closer to Tasmania and an associated frontal system moves through Bass Strait.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
King Island, Furneaux Islands, North East, North West Coast and Central North
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 65 km/h are likely from about noon Tuesday at King Island and northern parts of the North West Coast, extending eastwards along northern exposed parts of the coast during the afternoon, and the Furneaux Islands by evening.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 100 km/h are possible, especially in association with showers or isolated thunderstorms.
Winds will shift west to southwesterly and abate in the wake of the frontal system. Easing first at King Island and the North West Coast during Tuesday evening, then the Central North and North East, and finally the Furneaux Islands by early Wednesday.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Currie, Smithton, Whitemark and Bridport.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Monday.
