Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for King Island, North West Coast, Central Plateau and parts of Western Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:32 pm Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

Damaging wind gusts for King Island and parts of central and northwestern Tasmania.

Weather Situation
A strong northerly flow ahead of an approaching low pressure system is expected to produce damaging winds for elevated central and northwestern parts of the state, as well as for King Island and parts of the northwestern coast. This low will track south past the west coast of Tasmania tonight, with the damaging wind risk easing tomorrow morning as it moves away.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
King Island, Western, North West Coast and Central Plateau
For ELEVATED PARTS of CENTRAL AND NORTHWESTERN TASMANIA: Northeasterly to northwesterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 80 km/h with peak gusts of 110 km/h are likely, easing below warning thresholds by Wednesday morning.
For KING ISLAND and parts of the NORTHWEST COAST: Strong northeasterly to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 100 km/h are possible, easing below warning thresholds by Wednesday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Burnie, Currie, Smithton, Zeehan, Waratah, Rosebery and Lake St Clair.
A 102 km/h gust was recorded at Mount Read, with sustained winds of 72 km/h in the period about 1:30 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Tuesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
King Island, North West Coast, Central North and Midlands forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and northerly winds are expected during Tuesday and Wednesday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the King Island, North West Coast, Central North and Midlands forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Tuesday.
