Headline:
Tropical Low 12U is developing off the northeast Queensland coast, with impacts expected through the weekend.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: Port Douglas to Airlie Beach, including Cairns, Innisfail, Townsville, Bowen and Proserpine.

Watch zone: None.

Cancelled zone: None.

Details of Tropical Low 12U at 4:00 am AEST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 85 kilometres of 15.7 degrees South 148.0 degrees East, estimated to be 275 kilometres east northeast of Cairns and 415 kilometres north northeast of Townsville.
Movement: south at 11 kilometres per hour.
A tropical low (12U) is developing in the Coral Sea, west-northwest of Willis Island. It has begun moving south-southwest and is expected to move towards the North Tropical Coast later today. It is forecast to cross the coast between Cardwell and Airlie Beach, most likely early on Sunday.
Tropical Low 12U is forecast to reach tropical cyclone intensity prior to reaching the coast. However, heavy rainfall and damaging wind impacts are likely to be similar whether or not the system develops into a tropical cyclone.

Hazards:
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h may occur about the exposed coastal areas and elevated terrain between Port Douglas and Tully, including Cairns, this morning as the system tracks southwards and closer to the coast.
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h are expected to develop over coastal areas between Tully and Airlie Beach, this afternoon or evening. Gales may extend to Proserpine and adjacent inland areas tonight. Gales are expected to persist until the system crosses the coast on Sunday morning.
HEAVY RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, is forecast to develop north of Townsville this morning, extending south to Airlie Beach as the day progresses. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING, is possible between Tully and Airlie Beach later on Saturday.
Tides are likely to be higher than normal between Port Douglas and Airlie Beach over the weekend but should not exceed the highest tide of the year.
A Severe Weather Warning is also current for heavy to locally intense rainfall and damaging winds about the northeast and central Queensland coasts. Flood Watches and Warnings are also current.

Recommended Action:
People between Port Douglas and Airlie Beach, including Cairns, Innisfail, Townsville, Bowen and Proserpine, should take precautions and listen to the next advice at 8 am.

for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Peninsula Forecast Districts.

A tropical low approaches the northeast tropical coast, bringing heavy to LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and damaging winds from later today, continuing over the weekend.

Weather Situation
A broad tropical low (12U) is located over the western Coral Sea and has begun moving south towards the northeast Queensland coast. The Low now has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone this weekend before moving inland on Sunday. The strongest winds around the Low are far removed from the centre with a surge in southeasterly winds to the south of the Low prior to approach expected to bring a broad risk of damaging winds to coastal areas on the weekend.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Peninsula, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays and Central Highlands and Coalfields
For COASTAL AREAS: East to southeasterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with wind gusts around 90 km/h are expected about exposed coastal parts north of Tully. Damaging winds will extend south along the coast throughout the warning area today, and will turn east to northeasterly south of 12U on this evening, with gusts peaking around 100 km/h between Tully and Airlie Beach.
For areas SOUTH of PORT DOUGLAS: HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop north of Townsville this morning, and extend south through the remainder of the coast as the day progresses. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 90 to 170 mm are likely. 24-hourly totals between 200 to 275 mm are likely, with isolated falls in excess of 400 mm possible. Further inland, HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop from late tonight into Sunday morning, with six-hourly rainfall totals between 90 and 150 mm are possible.
Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible about coastal areas between Tully and Airlie Beach from Saturday afternoon, particularly near and south of the low centre, with isolated six-hourly falls in excess of 250 mm possible.
Conditions could begin to ease about the North Tropical Coast north of Innisfail by late this evening, but persist into Sunday over parts of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays.

Rainfall totals and warning area is dependent on the development and position of the tropical low. The situation for inland areas and areas south of Mackay is being monitored and a warning will be issued if necessary.
A separate Severe Weather Warning associated with monsoonal winds is current for people in the Peninsula. Flood Watch and Warning products are also current for large parts of Queensland, including the northeast. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if intense rainfall is detected.
Underlying wet soils will make trees easier to fall about the northeast tropical coast. Landslips could also occur about steep and hilly terrain.

The timing and location of the heaviest falls will depend on the development and track of the tropical low. This rainfall is likely to result in rapid river and creek level rises across the catchment.
Major flooding is possible across the Lower Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station, Gairloch and Halifax from early Sunday with forecast rainfall.

A monsoon low has resulted in rainfall and river level rises across the Tully River catchment over the past couple days. Further heavy rainfall is forecast to develop from overnight Friday into Saturday. The timing and the location of the heaviest falls will depend on the development and track of the tropical low. This rainfall is likely to result in further river level rises across the catchment, where minor flooding is likely at Euramo overnight Friday into Saturday, and further rises to the moderate flood level are possible from Saturday afternoon.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE IN THE JOHNSTONE RIVER OVERNIGHT FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY
Heavy rainfall is forecast to develop across the Johnstone River catchment from overnight Friday into Saturday. The timing and the location of the heaviest falls will depend on the development and track of the tropical low. The rainfall is likely to result in river level rises across the catchment, where minor flooding is possible at McAvoy Bridge, Mourilyan Mill and Innisfail Wharf from overnight Friday into Saturday.
This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for the Johnstone River catchments. A Severe Weather Warning for heavy to locally intense rainfall is current for the Johnstone River catchment.

North Johnstone:
Minor flooding is possible along the North Johnstone River overnight Friday into Saturday.
The North Johnstone River at McAvoy Bridge is currently at 1.20 m AHD and steady, below the minor flood level.
The North Johnstone River at McAvoy Bridge may reach around the minor flood level (5.00 m AHD) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

South Johnstone:
Minor flooding is possible along the South Johnstone River overnight Friday into Saturday.
No observations are currently available for the South Johnstone River at Mourilyan Mill, however, the river level is expected to be below the minor flood level (8.00m).
The South Johnstone River at Mourilyan Mill may reach around the minor flood level (8.00 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT PEETS BRIDGE AND GORDONVALE OVERNIGHT FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY
Rainfall overnight Wednesday into Thursday has led to river level rises across the Mulgrave and Russell River catchments. Minor flood peaks were observed at Peets Bridge and Gordonvale during Thursday afternoon. River levels have now fallen below minor flood levels along the Mulgrave River but renewed rises to the minor flood level are possible with forecast rainfall overnight Friday into Saturday.
Further heavy to locally intense rainfall remains possible over the coming days. Higher levels may be possible with forecast rain. The situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for adjoining catchments. A Severe Weather Warning for heavy to locally intense rainfall is current for the Mulgrave-Russell catchment.

Mulgrave River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Mulgrave River.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge peaked at 6.20 m AHD around 03:00 pm Thursday 8 January, with minor flooding. The river is currently at 3.59 m AHD and falling, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge may reach around the minor flood level (5.00 m AHD) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.

The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale peaked at 12.50 m around 05:00 pm Thursday 8 January, with minor flooding. The river is currently at 9.85 m and falling, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale may reach around the minor flood level (12.00 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.

Russell River:
River levels are elevated along the Russell River, with minor flooding occurring at Clyde Road. Further river level rises are likely with forecast rainfall.
