Flood Watch For Northern And Eastern Cape York Peninsula
Issued at 01:55 PM EST on Friday 19 April 2024
Flood Watch Number: 4
FLOODING POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF EASTERN AND NORTHERN CAPE YORK PENINSULA FROM FRIDAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND
A moist easterly flow may combine with a slow-moving trough to produce localised moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in parts of the eastern and northern Peninsula over the next couple of days, becoming less likely later this weekend.
Catchments within the Flood Watch area remain relatively wet from recent rainfall and can respond to further rainfall quickly.
Isolated daily rainfall totals of 50 mm to 100 mm are possible in areas north of Coen and along the east coast north of Port Douglas, with this risk expected to contract northward from Saturday.
River level rises and riverine flooding are possible within the Flood Watch area from Friday and across the weekend. Low level road crossings and causeways are likely to become inundated by this flooding, which may impact transport routes across Cape York Peninsula.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Jardine River

Watson River
Archer and Coen Rivers
Mitchell River
Jacky Jacky Creek
