Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for South Coast and parts of Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains Forecast Districts.

Heavy rainfall and damaging winds are possible in the southeast today.

Weather Situation
A coastal trough is developing just off the south coast this morning, and is expected to direct areas of heavy rain and damaging south to southeasterly winds over southeastern parts of the state today.
HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible over parts of the South Coast this morning, with this risk spreading to parts of the Illawarra from later in the morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 and 80 mm are likely, and isolated totals up to 120 mm are possible.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible about parts of the southeast from later this morning.
A separate warning for DAMAGING SURF is current for coastal locations between Eden and Ulladulla.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay, Eden, Braidwood and Bega.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southeasterly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the South Coast forecast district and parts of the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Hazardous Surf Warning for New South Wales

Weather Situation
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.
Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:
Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast

Warnings for Saturday 17 January

Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:
Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

Damaging Surf for southern NSW

Weather Situation
A trough is expected to develop into a low pressure system on Friday, bringing strong to gale force southeasterly winds, and elevated waves.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
South Coast
DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS which may lead to coastal erosion and localised damage to coastal infrastructure are expected between Eden and Ulladulla from Friday afternoon, particularly for southeast facing beaches.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
Damaging surf conditions are expected to ease during Saturday afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Batemans Bay, Eden, Moruya Heads, Ulladulla, Narooma and Merimbula.


The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
