Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Northern Tablelands, Hunter and South Coast Forecast Districts.

Issued at 5:00 pm Wednesday, 2 July 2025.

Damaging winds with a vigorous coastal low persisting about parts of eastern NSW.

Weather Situation
A broad area of low pressure remains in place off the east coast of NSW. An initial low-pressure system off the southern Mid North Coast will continue to track to the east away from the coast, however a secondary lobe of the complex low will approach the southern coast this evening then move northwards just offshore from the coast leading to the risk of a renewed burst of damaging winds about some coastal localities. Winds are expected to ease about the coast and high terrain in the north of the state as the entire low system tracks further east into the Tasman during Thursday morning.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast and Northern Tablelands
DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible this evening along the most exposed parts of the coastal fringe from the South Coast through to the Mid North Coast, including Wollongong and the eastern Sydney Metropolitan. Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds during Thursday morning.
Strong to DAMAGING WEST TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely about parts of the Northern Tablelands, the Mid North Coast hinterland and about the Border Ranges, and are expected to continue through to Thursday morning.
A separate Coastal Hazard Warning is also current for parts of the NSW coast. Refer to: http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/
Locations which may be affected include eastern Sydney Metropolitan, Wollongong, Ulladulla, and Tenterfield.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
Significant wind observations:
104 km/h gust was recorded at Montague Island Lighthouse at 10:45 am.
93 km/h gust was recorded at Point Perpendicular at 1:04 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

Hazardous Surf Warning for New South Wales

Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Northern Tablelands, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Wednesday and Thursday. Areas likely to be affected include the South Coast and Snowy Mountains forecast districts and parts of the Northern Tablelands, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Damaging surf conditions for central and southern NSW

Weather Situation
A coastal low pressure system offshore from the Mid North Coast is moving northeast into the Tasman Sea this evening while a secondary lobe of low pressure approaches the southern coasts. Strong to gale force south to southwesterly winds around these lows are expected to generate large and powerful south to southeasterly waves this evening and into Thursday.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast
DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS which may lead to coastal erosion and localised damage to coastal infrastructure are likely for coastlines between Seal Rocks and the New South Wales/Victorian border today and Thursday.
These conditions are expected to begin easing during Thursday, initially for southern coastlines during Thursday morning, and may ease throughout the warning area by late Thursday afternoon.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.

Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Terrigal, Wamberal, The Entrance, Sydney, Wollongong, Batemans Bay and Eden.
A significant wave height of 6.4m was observed at the Port Kembla Waverider Buoy at 5pm on the 1st of July.
A significant wave height of 6.4m was observed at the Eden Waverider Bouy at 1am on the 2nd July.
A significant wave height of 6.6m was observed at the Batemans Bay Waverider Buoy at 3am on the 2nd July.
A significant wave height of 5.2m was observed at the Sydney Waverider Buoy at 9am on the 2nd July.


The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
