Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:03 pm Tuesday, 8 July 2025.
Damaging winds continue over the southern and central ranges, easing early on Wednesday. A renewed damaging wind risk is expected over the alpine region late on Wednesday night.
Weather Situation
Strong and gusty west to northwesterly winds continue over elevated areas, associated with a cold front that swept over the southeast of the state earlier in the evening. A second frontal system approaches NSW late Wednesday, bringing a renewed increase in northwesterly winds across the alpine peaks. During Thursday, winds then shift to southwesterlies in the wake of the system and there is the potential for damaging winds to extend to additional eastern parts of the state.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
ALPINE PEAKS ABOVE 1900 METRES: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are occurring with isolated gusts between 110 and 125 km/h. Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds before dawn on Wednesday, but DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are likely to redevelop again late on Wednesday evening.
BLIZZARD conditions are possible across the western Snowy Mountains above 1500 metres until early Wednesday morning, and may redevelop again late on Wednesday. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
ELSEWHERE IN THE WARNING AREA: Strong west to northwesterly winds with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are expected over the remainder of the southern and central ranges into early Wednesday morning, and will likely ease before by dawn.
Locations which may be affected include Thredbo, Perisher, Goulburn, Katoomba, Lithgow, Oberon and Crookwell.
A 128 km/h wind gust was recorded at Thredbo at 3:15 pm.
Periods of sustained 80 to 95 km/h winds have been recorded at Thredbo throughout the day since 10:00 am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
