Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for Illawarra, South Coast, Snowy Mountains and parts of Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Australian Capital Territory Forecast Districts.

Damaging winds continue across the southeast this evening, easing during early Thursday morning.

Weather Situation
A strong frontal system has swept through eastern parts of the state and has now moved well offshore into the Tasman Sea. A strong west to southwesterly flow persists in its wake across the southeast of the state this evening, which will ease during early Thursday morning.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
For parts of the SNOWY MOUNTAINS above 1500 metres and ALPINE AREAS: DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h are likely with wind gusts reaching up to 110 km/h. Winds may possibly increase to average 80 to 90 km/h for areas above 1900 metres.
For the remaining parts of the warning area, including parts of the GREAT DIVIDING RANGE, the ILLAWARRA, and the west and southwest of the SYDNEY METROPOLITAN area: West to southwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS up to 100 km/h are likely this evening.
Winds are expected to ease throughout the warning area before sunrise on Thursday morning.
Locations which may be affected include west and southwest parts of Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Katoomba, Cooma, Campbelltown, Braidwood, Bombala, Kiama, Lithgow, Nerriga, Thredbo Top Station and Mount Ginini.
98 km/h wind gust was recorded at Perisher Valley at 5:53 pm.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mt Boyce at 3:43 pm.
100 km/h wind gust was recorded at Cabramurra at 3:28 pm.
102 km/h wind gust was recorded at Nerriga at 2:25 pm.
102 km/h wind gust was recorded at Bombala at 12:21 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEDT Thursday.
