Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts over the alpine peaks, spreading to southern coastal ranges early Tuesday and to the adjacent coastal area by Tuesday night.

Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system in the Great Australian Bight will deliver a series of cold fronts across southeastern Australia over the next couple of days with increased winds and cold temperatures in its wake. The first front moves through the far southeast early Tuesday bringing damaging wind gusts about the alpine peaks, spreading to the coastal ranges overnight. Another frontal system is expected later Tuesday into Wednesday, with renewed windy conditions likely across the same area, but now also including coastal portions of the South Coast and Illawarra.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
ALPINE PEAKS ABOVE 1900M: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h are tonight and during Tuesday.
ELSEWHERE ABOVE 1400M: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast to develop from early Tuesday.
Blizzard conditions are forecast to develop from Tuesday afternoon above 1400 m in western parts of the Snowy Mountains. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
For the northern SOUTH COAST and ILLAWARRA: Strong west-northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS at or above 90 km/h are possible from late evening Tuesday into the morning hours of Wednesday.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Bombala, Kiama and Ulladulla.
Winds gusts above 90 km/h have been observed at Thredbo Top Station since 4 am Monday. Highest wind gust of 117 km/hr has been recorded at 10 pm Monday.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEST Tuesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
